a couple of squirrels were darting in and out of the rock wall at one of the scenic view stops near the top of Mt. Lemmon. Look closely at the first photo and you can see the eye of one hiding between the rocks. He would eventually come out for a quick peek around.
As we rounded a corner at the top of Mt. Lemmon, we saw a car half-way over an embankment beside the road. We stopped, fearing the worst. Turned out the woman had pulled to the side of the road to look out over Biosphere 2 and didn’t get the car all of the way into park. The car rolled away as she looked on helplessly. She wasn’t hurt and a firefighter stopped and called for assistance.
It would have been in bad taste to take an obvious photo, so I snapped this one in my side-view mirror.
I was named, indirectly, after my grandmother’s younger brother. My grandmother was very close to her brother and named her only son after him. From then on, it was ‘big Curtis and little Curtis’. My great Uncle was killed in an accident about 3 months before I was born and to console his mom, my dad said he would name his unborn son Curtis so there would always be ‘big Curtis and little Curtis.’
My great uncle Curtis Jones was a Navy veteran who served aboard the USS Medusa (photo below) during WWII, something my grandmother was always proud of. She thought he looked dashing in his uniform (I have a photo somewhere) and always hoped I would join the Navy. I had to disappointment her, military life wasn’t something that interested me.
On this Memorial Day, remember those that served, especially the Greatest Generation, not many remain.
